Positioning Statement

Institutions of Islamic Law is positioned as an international scholarly journal dedicated to advancing institutional perspectives within the field of Islamic legal studies. The journal recognises that Islamic law is not only expressed through legal doctrines and jurisprudential reasoning, but is also developed, interpreted, implemented, and transformed through a wide range of institutions operating at local, national, regional, and transnational levels.

The journal is founded on the view that institutions constitute a fundamental analytical dimension for understanding the contemporary development of Islamic law. Institutions such as courts, fatwa councils, waqf authorities, zakat agencies, Islamic financial institutions, religious administrations, customary communities, educational organisations, regulatory bodies, and international governance frameworks continuously shape the interpretation, implementation, and evolution of Islamic law in diverse societal contexts.

Accordingly, the journal positions itself as a specialised forum for scholarship examining the interaction between Islamic law and the institutions through which legal authority, governance, accountability, public policy, and social transformation are realised. Rather than limiting inquiry to doctrinal analysis alone, the journal encourages research that integrates institutional, empirical, comparative, socio-legal, historical, governance, and interdisciplinary perspectives.

This positioning reflects the journal's commitment to fostering theoretically informed, methodologically rigorous, and internationally relevant scholarship that contributes to broader discussions on law, institutions, governance, and society. By emphasising institutional perspectives, the journal seeks to facilitate constructive dialogue across jurisdictions, legal traditions, and academic disciplines while promoting a deeper understanding of the role of institutions in shaping the contemporary practice and development of Islamic law.
